Top 10 Habits of Annoying Drivers
Top 10 Habits of Annoying Drivers
Do other drivers honk at you for no apparent reason? Do people yell out their window or flash obscene gestures at you when you're just driving along, minding your own business?
If you answered yes to either (or both) of these questions, you might be an annoying driver.
Now don't get me wrong, being semi-retired I am very rarely in a rush to get anywhere. But the actions of annoying drivers could cause those who ARE in a hurry, to reach their boiling point and go all "Road Ragey" on you.
Here's a list of things I see drivers do every single day that are aggravating to other drivers, including me.
1. Creating a rolling blockade; If you are going the exact same speed as the vehicle next to you, you are making it totally impossible for anyone to pass. This is particularly annoying on any road with only two lanes in each direction. Move to the next lane and allow other drivers to pass, even if they're breaking the law by going faster than the posted limit.
2. Coming to a complete stop before entering a business driveway; Is your car so junky that you have to come to a stop before entering a parking lot? The part B to this annoying habit is people that refuse to move out of the traffic lane before making their right hand turn. You are allowed to drive in the bike lane 200 feet prior to your turn. Please do so.
3. Talking or texting on your phone; It's no secret that people using their phone while driving are now responsible for more injury accidents than drunk drivers. Yet some people feel they have the right to do this even if it means injuring or killing innocent pedestrians and/or other drivers. PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN!!!
4. Failing to move at a green light; This one goes right along with #3. Many people on their phones are totally oblivious to the green light in front of them. I've seen these people sit through an entire green light cycle.
5. Hogging the left lane; The far left lane is really intended to allow drivers to pass slower vehicles. If you see traffic lining up behind you, keep moving one lane to your right until you find a lane with a speed more in your comfort zone. If there are cars behind you as you saunter along, you can be cited for impeding traffic.
6. Driving with your high-beams on; This is one sign of an impaired driver. Sometimes you'll see them
driving with no headlights on at all. Both are very dangerous for other drivers and pedestrians.
7. Tailgating; If you encounter a driver violating my #5 annoying habit, resist the urge to get too close. I've witnessed elderly drivers see someone on their bumper and then slam on their brakes out of fear. Then there's also the person looking to sue you for rear-ending them. Just know this, if you run into someone from behind, you will be found 100% liable for the accident.
8. Pulling out in front of someone; I have no idea why people do this, but it happens every single day. Someone at a side street or from a business parking lot will pull out onto a major roadway with traffic coming right at them. Honking at this annoying driver will usually subject you to a one-finger salute. It's like they feel they have the God-given right to cut people off.
9. Speeding up when you see a car put on their turn signal to change lanes; If you see a car with its turn signal on, why not let them in front of you? They'll probably be making a turn very shortly and you'll have the space in front of you clear again. But no.... a turn signal becomes a challenge for some annoying drivers while they attempt to disallow someone to get in their lane. Don't be that guy (or girl).
10. Not using your turn signal; I almost understand this one given people's penchant for doing #9 on my list. Don't let this annoying driver prevent you from using your signal. Turn signals are so everyone around you knows what your intention is and hopefully allow you to get into your desired lane.
If everyone complied with this simple list and even went above and beyond, driving might not be so frustrating.
Let people in when traffic is heavy. Wave at people that let you in. Be considerate and compassionate.
